For an IPF-rules meet, pack from the rulebook—not from a generic gym bag list. IPF Technical Rulebook version 3 is effective 1 March 2026 and is the ruleset summarised here.[MG-C01] India does not have one universal meet ruleset: your event invitation and organiser must confirm whether this IPF guidance applies.

What each status means

Meet-gear decision key
StatusMeaning in this guide
RequiredYou must wear or use it in the stated lift or division.
Allowed with limitsPermitted only within the stated use and restrictions.
OptionalNot required; legal only when the item meets the rules.
Equipped-onlySupportive equipment for Equipped, not Classic, lifting.
Training-onlyUseful in training but not treated as platform equipment here.
ProhibitedDo not wear or use it on the platform under this ruleset.

Required, allowed, optional, and prohibited gear

IPF v3 enumerates personal equipment and permits equipment checks; using an illegal item after inspection can lead to disqualification.[MG-C02] The summary below is deliberately shorter than the rulebook. Read the cited pages before buying or competing.

IPF v3 first-meet equipment table
ItemIPF v3 statusWhereWhat a first-time lifter should know
Singlet or supportive suitRequiredClassic and EquippedWear a non-supportive singlet in Classic; Equipped permits a compliant supportive suit instead. The applicable item must meet approval rules.
T-shirtRequiredAll three lifts; supportive-shirt exception in EquippedA compliant T-shirt is required for all three lifts. In Equipped, an approved supportive shirt may replace the T-shirt; the two cannot be worn together.
UnderwearRequiredUnder the lifting suitWear a standard commercial athletic supporter or standard commercial briefs. Women may also wear a commercial or sports bra.
Shoes or bootsRequiredAll three liftsWear compliant shoes or boots; the rule includes powerlifting boots and deadlift slippers, with a flat sole no thicker than 5 cm.
Deadlift socksRequiredDeadlift, unless an approved long-legged singlet covers the shinsShin-length socks must cover the shins for deadlifts with a standard singlet. IPF v3 says they are not mandatory with an approved long-legged singlet.
BeltOptionalClassic and EquippedIf used, it must be approved and stay within the rulebook's 10 cm width and 13 mm thickness limits.
Knee sleevesOptionalClassic and Equipped; not with knee wrapsIf used, approved sleeves are limited to 7 mm thick and 30 cm long. Sleeves and knee wraps cannot be worn together.
Wrist wrapsOptionalClassic and EquippedIf used, wraps are limited to 1 m long and 8 cm wide and must be worn within the stated placement limits.
Chalk and listed powdersAllowed with limitsBody or attire; never wraps or footwear adhesiveBaby powder, resin, talc and magnesium carbonate may be added only to the body or attire, not wraps. No adhesive may be used under footwear, including resin or magnesium carbonate, and no foreign substance may be applied to competition equipment.
Supportive suit and shirtEquipped-onlyEquippedSupportive suits and supportive shirts belong to Equipped lifting and must comply with the approved list.
Knee wrapsEquipped-onlyEquipped; not with sleevesKnee wraps are limited to 2 m long and 8 cm wide and cannot be combined with knee sleeves.
Lifting strapsTraining-onlyNot a platform aid under IPF v3Treat straps as a training tool, not meet equipment. This is a conservative inference; confirm a different ruleset with its organiser.
Supportive underwearProhibitedUnder the lifting suitSupportive undergarments and rubberized or similar stretch garments are not legal under the lifting suit.
HatsProhibitedPlatformHats are prohibited on the platform under IPF v3.

The lifting-strap row is an inference, not a quoted prohibition: personal equipment is enumerated, while the deadlift rule requires the bar to be gripped with both hands.[MG-C04] If your meet uses another ruleset, ask its organiser rather than transferring this conclusion.

Classic and Equipped are different kit decisions

A current India-facing nomination platform displays Classic and Equipped competitions separately.[MG-C05] That is useful evidence that a first-time lifter should check the division, but it does not identify a universal Indian ruleset. Under IPF v3, supportive suits, supportive shirts, and knee wraps belong to Equipped lifting; Classic uses the non-supportive equipment and optional items shown above.

How to check the current approved list

The IPF owner page currently links an approved list for 2023–2026, valid through 31 December 2026.[MG-C03] Approval is time-sensitive. Check the exact item—not just the manufacturer—against the latest official file, then confirm the organiser's inspection process.

  1. Open the approved-list owner page, then its current PDF.
  2. Match the exact equipment type, manufacturer, and model.
  3. Check the dimensions and use restrictions in IPF v3.
  4. Read the event invitation for division and inspection details.
  5. Ask the organiser in writing when the event source is unclear.

What you still need to confirm with the organiser

  • The federation, ruleset, and version used by this meet.
  • Whether you entered Classic or Equipped.
  • When and where personal equipment will be inspected.
  • Whether chalk is supplied and where personal powder may be used.
  • Any event-specific document, logo, or clothing instructions.

“Confirm organiser” is a logistics check, not permission to ignore a published rule. If the invitation conflicts with the named rulebook, stop and obtain written clarification before travel.

First-meet equipment checklist

  1. Confirm the event's ruleset and Classic or Equipped division.
  2. Pack the suit required for your division, standard underwear, shoes, and deadlift socks; IPF v3 makes the socks optional only with an approved long-legged singlet that covers the shins. Pack a compliant T-shirt for all three lifts unless you are an Equipped lifter using an approved supportive shirt instead; never combine the two shirts.
  3. Check every optional regulated item against the current rules and list.
  4. Remove training-only items such as lifting straps from the platform kit.
  5. Save the rulebook, approved list, invitation, and organiser reply offline.
  6. Recheck the official sources seven days before travel and again if the organiser posts an update.

Before You Talk Yourself Out of It

No. This page names IPF Technical Rulebook version 3 as its scope. Check the event invitation and ask the organiser which federation, ruleset, division, and equipment-inspection process govern your meet.

Not under IPF v3. They are optional, but an item you choose to use must meet the rulebook and approval requirements. Required kit includes the applicable singlet or supportive suit, standard underwear, shoes, and deadlift socks in the circumstances listed above. A T-shirt is required for all three lifts unless an Equipped lifter wears an approved supportive shirt instead; the two shirts cannot be combined.

Treat lifting straps as training-only, not a permitted IPF platform aid. This is a conservative inference from the enumerated personal-equipment rules and the requirement to grip the bar with both hands, not a quotation saying 'straps prohibited.' Confirm another ruleset with its organiser.

Compare the exact item and model with the current official IPF approved list, not just a brand name or retailer claim. Then read the event instructions and bring the item to equipment inspection if the organiser requires it.
