Why Bench Press Technique Fails in the Same Few Spots, Every Time
Bar path, leg drive, and shoulder position aren't three separate fixes. Miss one and the other two can't cover for it.

Why bench press technique breaks down under load
Bench press technique breaks down when leg drive, bar path, or bracing fails on its own instead of working as one chain. Because the lift is short, there's little room to hide a leak in any single part, so a small fault shows up as a missed rep fast.
The bench press looks like the simplest of the three competition lifts: lie down, lower the bar, press it back up. That simplicity is misleading. More force gets lost to a bad bar path, a stalled leg drive, or shoulders shifting mid-rep on the bench than on either of the other two lifts, and lifters often mistake the result for a strength problem when it's actually a technique one.
The real cause of common bench press faults
Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength describes the bench as a full-body lift disguised as an upper-body one. Leg drive transmitted through a stable, arched torso is what the bar path actually depends on, not just the arms and chest. Austin and Mann's Powerlifting covers the bench in more competition-specific depth, including how grip width and shoulder positioning change the bar's ideal path and where the sticking point tends to land. The Barbell Prescription (Sullivan and Baker) makes the case that this kind of full-body coordination has to be taught deliberately at any training age. It isn't something bodies default to on their own.
Michael Zourdos and other researchers who study fatigue and autoregulation in training describe a similar pattern more broadly: a movement that looks automatic at low effort can fall apart the moment real fatigue enters the picture, because the body reverts to whichever version needs the least coordination.
In practice, the bar should travel in a slight diagonal, down to roughly the lower chest and back up toward the shoulders, riding on top of a tight upper back and driven by the legs pushing into the floor. When any one part of that chain loosens, the other two have to work harder to compensate, and that compensation is what shows up as a missed lift.
Common bench press technique faults to watch for
The bar drifting toward the face on the way up usually means it lost its path back toward the shoulders and started following the shortest line instead, which is mechanically weaker near lockout. Elbows flaring out early shift load onto the shoulders and away from the chest and triceps, which feels fine on a light set and becomes the limiting factor the moment the weight gets heavy. Legs that quietly stop contributing under heavier loads often show up as hips lifting off the bench trying to compensate, a different fault with a different fix. And an inconsistent bar path between reps of the same set is common, because bracing fatigues before the arms do.
Grip width changes where most of these faults show up. A wider grip shortens the bar path and asks more of the chest and shoulders early, so a bracing fault tends to appear right off the chest. A narrower grip lengthens the path and leans more on triceps lockout strength, so the same bracing fault often waits until the last few inches to show up instead. Neither grip is automatically correct. Austin and Mann's Powerlifting treats grip width as something chosen for a lifter's proportions and sticking point, not a fixed rule.
The same setup discipline carries over from the squat and the deadlift: a position that holds on rep one has to be rebuilt on rep five, not assumed.
Why competition bench asks more of technique than training bench
Training bench is usually touch-and-go: the bar comes down and goes right back up on its own momentum. Competition bench isn't. A judge's command requires the bar to stop dead on the chest, wait, then press on a second command, which removes the small rebound most lifters lean on without noticing. Rippetoe's novice linear progression and most other named beginner programs are built around touch-and-go training bench, which is one reason a lifter's gym bench and competition bench can diverge before anyone realizes it: the pause is a different skill, not just a stricter version of the same one.
That gap tends to close by the time a lifter reaches an intermediate model like the Texas Method, which typically separates bench into a heavy day and a lighter volume day each week. The heavy day is closer to a competition test of whether technique holds under near-maximal effort. The volume day tests something different: whether the same technique holds up rep after rep once fatigue, not just load, is the problem.
Technique work never really stops
A bench cue that fixes bar path at a moderate weight can stop applying the moment a lifter adds a pause, a competition command, or ten more kilos. The fix isn't wrong, it just needs checking again at the new weight, the same way it was checked the first time. That's the actual argument for ongoing coaching rather than a one-off correction: the lift keeps changing, so the check has to keep happening too, regardless of how experienced the lifter already is.

Before You Talk Yourself Out of It
Competition adds a paused command and a judge watching for it, on top of everything the lift already asks of you. A bench that only works without a pause, or without waiting for a command, isn't the same lift as a competition bench. That gap is exactly what technique coaching closes before a meet, not something you find out about on the platform.
No. An arch that keeps your shoulder blades pinned and your hips on the bench is a legal, standard part of competitive bench technique, not a shortcut. What actually gets flagged is a hip that lifts off the bench, which is a different issue entirely. A coach can tell you which one you're doing.
