Most Deadlift Technique Faults Start Before the Bar Leaves the Floor

Hip height, bar path, and where your back starts to round are set in the first inch of the pull, not somewhere in the middle of it.

Why deadlift technique breaks down under load

Deadlift technique is decided mostly in the setup, before the bar leaves the floor. Hips set too high or too low relative to the shoulders change the whole movement pattern that follows, and that one early position accounts for most of the faults lifters bring to a coach.

The deadlift has the simplest instruction of the three competition lifts: pick the bar up off the floor. That simplicity hides how much of the lift is decided before the bar moves at all. A setup that's an inch off tends to produce the same visible faults every time: the back rounding, the bar drifting away from the shins, the hips shooting up before the chest, and most lifters read all three as separate mistakes rather than one setup problem.

The real cause of common deadlift faults

Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength treats the deadlift's starting position (bar over mid-foot, shins near the bar, hips at a height that lets the back stay rigid) as the single most important variable in the lift, because everything after the first inch follows from that position. Austin and Mann's Powerlifting covers how grip choice and back positioning interact with heavier competition loads specifically. The Barbell Prescription (Sullivan and Baker) frames teaching the hip hinge pattern underneath the deadlift as something that has to be built deliberately and revisited, not assumed permanent once it's learned once.

Greg Nuckols and other strength researchers who translate sports-science findings for lifters make a related point about the hip hinge generally: it's a skill with its own learning curve, not a shortcut version of the squat, and it degrades under the same fatigue and load pressure any other skill does.

The mechanism is straightforward once you see it: the deadlift is a hip hinge with the spine held rigid, not a squat and not a stiff-legged pull. Start with the hips too low, and the movement drifts toward a squat pattern the legs aren't positioned to finish. Start too high, and the back ends up doing work the hips and legs should be doing, which is exactly when rounding shows up.

Common deadlift technique faults to watch for

Hips shooting up before the chest rises, sometimes called the stripper deadlift, happens when the legs finish their part of the pull before the back is ready to take over, turning the lift into a stiff-legged good morning partway through. The bar drifting forward, away from the shins, forces it to travel a longer, weaker path once contact is lost, which usually shows up as a grinding, stalled pull just above the knee. Losing a braced, flat back near lockout matters most for safety, and it's also the fault lifters are least likely to feel happening, because by the time it shows up, most of the effort has already gone into the pull.

Grip choice affects a fault that's easy to miss: a mixed grip, with one palm forward and one back, can pull one shoulder slightly out of position relative to the other, especially as the weight gets heavy. Austin and Mann's Powerlifting covers this as a real tradeoff, not a free upgrade. A mixed grip holds more weight, but a hook grip keeps both shoulders working symmetrically, and which one is right depends on grip strength and how visible the asymmetry actually is on video, not on which one looks more advanced.

The same setup discipline that fixes a squat or bench press fault applies here too: check the position before adding weight to it, not after.

Why the deadlift gets less practice than the other two lifts

Most named novice programs, including Rippetoe's linear progression, program the deadlift less often than the squat or bench, typically once or twice a week instead of nearly every session, because a heavy deadlift is more taxing to recover from at a comparable relative effort. That lower frequency means fewer total reps to groove the setup position described above, which is part of why a deadlift fault can take longer to resolve than a similar fault in the squat or bench.

Intermediate programs like the Texas Method keep that same logic and go further: one heavy deadlift session a week, sometimes every other week, built around fewer, higher-quality attempts rather than frequent practice. That structure puts more weight on getting the setup right before the pull starts, since there isn't a second or third heavy attempt that day to fix it on.

Technique work never really stops

A setup cue that works at a training weight can quietly stop holding once a lifter is close to a real maximum, because that's exactly when fatigue and load find the weakest link in the position. Deadlift setup is worth checking again at every new working weight, the same way it was checked the first time, which is the whole premise behind coaching that stays involved rather than handing over a program once and disappearing. The same holds true long after a lifter stops thinking of themselves as a beginner.

Some rounding, especially in the upper back, shows up even in experienced competitive lifters on a true maximal attempt. What's different is uncontrolled rounding, especially through the lower back, that shows up well before the weight is actually maximal. A coach watching your setup can tell you which one you're doing, because they look similar from the lifter's side of the bar and very different from a coach's.

That depends on your limb lengths, hip mobility, and where you're strongest in the pull, not on which stance looks more impressive. It's a real coaching decision, not a one-size-answer, and it's worth having someone actually assess it rather than picking based on what's popular.

Light weight is where you can feel and correct your setup, and that matters. But some faults, like the back rounding under real load or the hips shooting up early, only appear once the weight is heavy enough to expose them. That's why coaching needs to see you at your actual working weights, not only during light technique work.
